At Lighthouse Counseling, we understand that trauma changes everything.

Whether your trauma stems from childhood experiences, betrayal, abuse, or a single life-altering event, the aftermath can disrupt every area of your life—your relationships, your mental health, your sense of self. For many, trauma isn’t just a memory. It’s a feeling, a reaction, a loop they can’t escape.

If you’re struggling with the emotional and psychological impact of trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), know this: you are not broken—and you are not alone.

Healing is possible. And we’re here to help with trauma & PTSD treatment counseling.

Trauma & PTSD

What Is Trauma?

Trauma occurs when an event or series of events overwhelms your ability to cope, causing emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical distress. While trauma can look different from person to person, it often includes:

  • Abuse or neglect (physical, emotional, or sexual)
  • Betrayal by a partner or trusted individual
  • Accidents, surgeries, or medical emergencies
  • Natural disasters or witnessing violence
  • Exposure to chronic stress, fear, or instability
  • Repeated experiences of being shamed, silenced, or ignored

For some, trauma leads to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)—a condition that includes flashbacks, anxiety, hyper vigilance, sleep disturbances, emotional numbness, and more. But even without a formal diagnosis, the effects of trauma can be just as disruptive and deeply rooted.

Healing is possible. We're here to help.

At Lighthouse Counseling, we provide trauma-informed care that recognizes the impact trauma has on the brain, body, and behavior.

Our Trauma-Informed Approach

At Lighthouse Counseling, we provide trauma-informed care that recognizes the impact trauma has on the brain, body, and behavior. Our team creates a safe, non-judgmental space for you to explore and process your experiences at a pace that feels right to you.

We don’t ask, “What’s wrong with you?”—we ask, “What happened to you?”

Through evidence-based therapies, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), we help you move beyond the emotional and physiological grip of past trauma and into a space of clarity, self-compassion, and healing.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR is one of the most effective, non-invasive treatments for trauma and PTSD available today. It’s a structured therapy that helps the brain “reprocess” traumatic memories, so they no longer hold the same emotional charge.

During EMDR sessions, a trained therapist guides you through recalling a distressing event while using bilateral stimulation—such as directed eye movements, tapping, or sound cues—to engage both hemispheres of the brain. This helps to unlock the stuck trauma response and allows your brain to reprocess the event in a healthy, adaptive way.

EMDR is:

  • Backed by decades of research
  • Used by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the WHO
  • Proven effective for PTSD, anxiety, phobias, and complex trauma
  • Fast-acting and long-lasting for many clients

Our trauma-trained therapists use EMDR alongside other clinical tools to help you safely explore your history without re-experiencing the pain. We help your brain and body find relief—without having to relive every detail.

How Trauma Counseling Works at Lighthouse

Trauma & PTSD Treatment Counseling

Every client is different. We meet you exactly where you are and design a treatment plan that fits your story, your needs, and your healing goals.

Step 1: Initial Assessment

We begin by getting to know you. What symptoms are you experiencing? How is trauma showing up in your life? Do you feel safe in relationships? Are there memories or patterns you’re stuck in?

This foundation helps us understand what therapeutic approach will be most helpful—and how to move forward.

Step 2: Creating Safety

We focus first on stabilization—creating internal and external safety, building coping tools, and helping you ground in the present. You will never be pushed to disclose more than you’re ready for.

Step 3: Trauma Processing

When you’re ready, we work with you to process painful memories using EMDR and other methods such as:

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
    • Narrative Therapy
    • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
    • Betrayal Trauma Recovery (especially for partners)

Step 4: Integration and Healing

As you process your trauma, you’ll begin to notice changes—less anxiety, better sleep, improved emotional regulation, and increased connection in your relationships. We continue to support you as you integrate these changes into your daily life and redefine what safety and trust look like for you.

Trauma Shows Up in Many Forms

Sometimes trauma looks like flashbacks or panic attacks. Other times, it shows up in ways that are harder to identify—like perfectionism, emotional withdrawal, or an inability to relax. The effects of trauma can be subtle or overwhelming, but they are always real.

You may be experiencing trauma-related symptoms if you’ve noticed:

  • Difficulty trusting others
  • Feeling emotionally stuck or disconnected
  • Unexplained anxiety or depression
  • Avoidance of people, places, or memories
  • Sleep issues or chronic fatigue
  • Relationship struggles or repeated conflict
  • Feeling like you’re “too much” or “not enough”
  • Intrusive thoughts or emotional overwhelm

You don’t need to carry this alone. Healing is possible—and we can help.
